English International Phonetic Alphabet

The almost universally used English International Phonetic Alphabet was adopted in 1955 for use by international air traffic control, maritime, police, military (NATO), and other users of radio and telephone communication:

A – Alpha       H – Hotel          O – Oscar          V – Victor

B – Bravo       I – India          P – Papa           W – Whiskey     
C – Charlie     J – Juliet         Q – Quebec         X – X-Ray                  
D – Delta       K – Kilo           R – Romeo          Y – Yankee
E – Echo        L – Lima           S – Sierra         Z – Zulu
F – Foxtrot     M – Mike           T – Tango 
G – Golf        N – November       U – Uniform
Before 1955 there were a number of different standards in use, such as:

The old U.S. Navy Radio Alphabet:

A – Able        H – How            O – Oboe           V – Victor
B – Baker       I – Item           P – Peter          W – William
C – Charlie     J – Jig            Q – Queen          X – X-Ray
D – Dog         K – King           R – Roger          Y – Yoke
E – Easy        L – Love           S – Sugar          Z – Zebra
F – Fox         M – Mike           T – Tare
G – George      N – Nan            U – Uncle
 
The Western Union Phonetic Alphabet:
A – Adams       H – Hendry         O – Ocean          V – Victor
B – Boston      I – Ida            P – Peter          W – William  
C – Chicago     J – John           Q – Queen          X – X-Ray
D – Denver      K – King           R – Roger          Y – Young
E – Easy        L – Lincoln        S – Sugar          Z – Zero
F – Frank       M – Mary           T – Thomas 
G – George      N – NewYork        U – Union 

In Asia you will still find a variant of the following phonetic alphabet in common use, even by Airline Reservations staff (although the pilots, of course, use the International standard):
